Job Description:
Have you been living in spreadsheets your whole working life (or at least some significant part of it) and find yourself lacking … meaning or ownership? What if you could take your ability to analyze data and make good decisions and apply it to a fast and growing business? This business – Search Engine Marketing (SEM) for Hotwire.com – would be yours and yours alone. You own the analysis and decision-making for the program. You own the budget. You own the return on that budget. You own the words behind every single ad. You own the testing and optimization of those words.
But wait, it gets better. What if Hotwire is about to deploy a market leading tool to make it light years easier to grow your SEM business? This new tool will tie up-to-date financial information with search term data (from Google, Yahoo, and such) to allow you to optimize performance far faster and more accurately than was possible in the past. It will take what was a manual, line by line process and will turn it into something scalable. More search terms, more dollars per search terms. More money.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, we are looking for a competitive, analytical superstar to grow the heck out of our Search Engine Marketing program. Past experience in SEM is preferred. If you lack direct experience, but still have the core capabilities, we should talk. We’ve found in the past that direct experience works. But we’ve also found that folks from investment banking, consulting or even PhD research programs have been a good fit. And you don’t get killer travel discounts working for an investment bank or consulting firm, do you?
Core Responsibilities:
• Grow the profit associated with the SEM program through superior campaign management and project management.
• Support Search Engine Marketing through analysis, optimization, and new keyword acquisition
• Build search engine volume and efficiency forecasts as part of the annual business planning process
• Conceptualize and initiate tests (keyword bids, ad copy, and landing pages) in order to continually improve key metrics (click, search, convert) across campaigns
• Make recommendations on keyword selection and prioritize expansion efforts
• Manage relationships with search engine marketing partners
• Stay informed of industry trends and best practices
• Investigate and implement new technologies, services, automation capabilities, and/or vendor solutions that enhance SEM
• Act as the Search Engine Marketing point of contact on technical development
Requirements:
• Minimum 3-5 years of business experience. 2-4 years of search engine marketing experience preferred. Online retail experience is a plus
• Strong applied analytics. To us, this means you love data, gleaning insights from data, and making decisions based on data. You need to have demonstrable history of doing this. You need to want to keep doing this. Applied analytics should make you happy. Seriously.
• Ability to work on multiple things at once while staying focused on the details. We move at a fast pace and generally have 3-5 projects going at any one time.
• Curiosity. You ask what, why, how. Like “What are our competitors doing?”, “How are consumers thinking about this?”, “Why aren’t I getting the placement I thought I would get with this particular term and bid?”. You just have to know.
• An entrepreneurial spirit. We’re going to give you a business to own.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
